Summer Writing Camps

Margaret Mitchell House summer writing camps provide an opportunity for youth to discover the power and excitement of writing while honing their writing skills in a fun, interactive environment.  With 10-15 participants per camp, each writer receives individual attention while learning how to create meaningful prose through a variety of techniques, like stream-of-consciousness writing, journaling, free verse poetry, and more!

 

Camp fees are $325 for members; $375 for nonmembers.  Camp hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM.   All camps are for ages 10-14.

Mystery in the City: Search for the Lost Phoenix
June 4-8
This camp is for ages 10-14

Unravel the mysteries of historic Atlanta and gain inspiration from them to pen stories of mystery and intrigue. Take daily morning field trips to discover lesser known pockets of the city and personal stories of its residents.

Everyone’s a Critic
June 11-15
This camp is for ages 10-14

Spend mornings exploring the sights and sounds of Atlanta while visiting museums, theaters, parks, and other cultural destinations and soaking in everything our exciting city has to offer. Spend afternoons learning to think critically and evaluating your experiences through writing.

Good Things Come in Small Packages
June 18-22
This camp is for ages 10-14

Grow your love for all things small. From short stories and haiku, to fables, jokes, and even blogs, spend the week creating your own Lilliputian literary works while sharpening your craft to create succinct yet meaningful and well-rounded pieces.

Fairytales and Fantasy
June 25-29
This camp is for ages 10-14

Whether you love good, old fashioned fairytales, or richly developed fantasy stories, it is all about inventing a new world, new creatures, or even a new language. Gain inspiration from some of your favorite works and discover the fundamentals to creating your own unique world. Explore the possibilities!

From Page to Stage: Playwriting
July 9-13
This camp is for ages 10-14

Set the stage for the perfect summer. Delve into the world of theater, journeying from an inkling of an idea on the page, and from the page to the stage. Develop your own unique voice and experience first-hand the joy of hearing your words, characters, and situations come to life as you create a script for a live audience. Bravo!

Mystery in the City: Haunts and Habitats
July 16-20
This camp is for ages 10-14

Travel to the scene of the crime, imagine the shady characters who might have dwelt there, and then use your inspiration to craft your own mysterious story. Super sleuths enjoy four morning field trips to historic sites and public places around Atlanta and use the field trip experiences to delve into character, setting, plot, and dialogue.

Write On: The Essentials
July 23-27
This camp is for ages 10-14

Whether you are writing for fun or writing for school, you will benefit from learning the basics of doing research, building compelling characters and interesting plots, and writing a good story with good grammar. Through word and writing games, journaling, and an off-site observational field trip, learn the essentials that lead to a “writing life.”

Stories in Pictures: Creating Comics
July 30-August 3
This camp is for ages 10-14

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a comic book must be worth hundreds of pages of type. Develop your own characters and plot, and illustrate the world you create. By the end of the week, campers will have a comic book of their own creation to take home.

 

GENERAL SUMMER CAMP INFORMATION

Camp Hours:
• Monday through Friday 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM
• Each session wraps with a Writers Showcase for family and friends on the last day of camp.  Mark your calendars!
• MMH campers may be dropped off at the Margaret Mitchell House in Midtown after 9:15 AM and must be picked up by 5:00 PM.

 

Fees
•  $325 per week for Atlanta History Center members at the Family Membership level/$375 per week for nonmembers.

 

Lunch
• MMH campers must bring bag lunches each day.  In addition, light snacks will be provided.


Cancellation Policy
No refunds can be made for cancellations less than two weeks prior to the start of the selected camp.  Any cancellation or change made more than two weeks before your child’s first day of camp carries an administrative fee of $25; if you withdraw your child before this two week deadline you will receive a refund less the $25 fee.
