Designed to honor and preserve the legacy of Margaret Mitchell, the award-winning Literary Center at Margaret Mitchell House hosts regular programs with authors such as Alice Walker, Pat Conroy, Stuart Woods, Tom Wolfe, Jon Meacham, and Marilynne Robinson.

 

In addition to lectures, the Literary Center also offers annual creative writing classes for adults and youth, and community initiatives that engage younger generations in the process of writing, reading, and reciting literature, such as Poetry Out Loud. 

 

  • Lectures: The Literary Center offers a variety of lectures throughout the year, showcasing renowned authors who share insight into their latest publications.
  • Adult Writing Classes: Writing workshops are offered for adults throughout the year; workshops span the genres of freelance writing, playwriting, poetry, screenwriting, creative nonfiction and more.  Ranging from condensed weekend sessions to eight weeks, novice to experienced writers will find the ideal class to meet their individual lifestyle and writing needs.
  • Poetry Out Loud: An innovative program for high schools, encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation of the written word.  
  • Georgia Writers' Registry: Provides Georgia readers and organizations with an adjudicated directory of professional writers who are available for author readings, writing workshops, presentations, and other events.
  • Youth Writing Workshops: Our workshops provide the opportunity for young people to discover the power and exceitement of writing.  Participants are inspired to polish their writing skills in a fun, interactive environment.  
  • Atlanta Burning Book Club: If you're in a book club or looking for reading ideas, join us as we read great books.  Each month, our Atlanta Burning Book Club will select an author who will soon visit the Literary Center at the Margaret Mitchell House. 
  • The Big Read: A national program, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, that is designed to revitalize the role of reading in American culture and bring the power of literature into the lives of its citizens.
