The Georgian Terrace Hotel was developed by its owner, Mr. Joseph Francis Gatins, Sr. William L. Stoddart designed the 10-story, butter-colored, Parisian- styled hotel, and it was built by George C. Fuller Construction Company for a cost of $500,000. The hotel opened for business on October 2, 1911, and was considered the most luxurious, upscale hotel in the southeast. The hotel has hosted presidents, movie stars and rock stars. In 1918, Arthur Murray started teaching dance lessons at the hotel while he was a student at Georgia Tech. The pre-premiere reception for Gone with the Wind was held at the hotel on December 15, 1939. The producer and most of the movie’s stars stayed at the Georgian Terrace. In the 1970s, the hotel was the home of Alex Cooley’s Electric Ballroom, where many of the major rock bands of today performed. Today, the hotel is used in the filming of many major motion pictures and continues to host celebrities. It is regarded as the Grande Dame of Atlanta. Focused on Southern Hospitality, the Georgian Terrace continues to be a star in its own right.
